August is terrestrial time on the Henry’s Fork. Beetles, ants, and especially hoppers can turn our big rainbows into greedy opportunists. It’s a time when you can use terrestrial dries on the upper river to reliably bring up some large and otherwise finicky fish. The guides have discovered this opportunity and have been highly successful at setting up their clients for memorable days, whether floating or wading.

Late summer is also an ideal time to visit other nearby waters like the South Fork of the Snake, Teton, and Madison, where a large dry and a small dropper is the ticket for a highly productive float. It’s prime time for sight fishing for the large cruising rainbows and browns on nearby Hebgen and Quake Lake. Casting to the gulpers in the morning and then floating the Madison in the afternoon is a wonderful opportunity for a day of dry fly fishing.
