Excellent early season fishing!
I am happy to say that my predictions about early season dry fly fishing on the lower Henry’s Fork have been borne out by the stellar results from our guests and others. After years of fishing the river below Ashton, I’ve noticed a significant increase in large browns in the past few seasons.
The usual salmonfly mania surrounding Memorial Day weekend brought eager anglers and good success with the big bugs. As usual, after that flurry, the number of anglers moved on and the river reverted to a quieter normal. Young Tripp Hopkins and his dad, Braden, had some excellent dry fly fishing in the first week of June. Bill and Marcia Coulson also had great fishing on the lower river with Bill’s big brown being the biggest fish his guide has seen this year. Our fabulous pastry chef, Emily, encountered tons of golden stones on the banks of the lower river, but the the trophy brown ate the green drake. (See the photo below.)
Evening fishing on that same part of the river has been quietly wonderful, with sneaky browns rising subtly in the bankside shallows to caddis. Challenging but rewarding dry fly fishing for fish in that 16-20” sweetspot has been the rule.
