Salmonflies!

Huge salmonflies are the first major hatch of the season in the Rockies and the Henry’s Fork is usually the first to have them. Savvy anglers come to the Henry’s Fork starting in late May to fish for rainbows and browns that haven’t seen an angler or fly for many months. The lower river is the place where they start and the spring-fed Henry’s Fork runs clear, unlike most other rivers in the Rockies at that time. Large fish are attuned to the big bugs on the surface, so you can fish big dries as well as nymphs.

The salmonfly hatch will progress up the river for several weeks and is followed by the slightly smaller golden stoneflies that last even longer and also bring those same big fish up to dry flies. You can catch those two hatches over the first month of the season – late May to late June – on the Henry’s Fork. The Lodge has space scattered through that period, beginning on May 28, so call (208-558-7953) or email us to experience some exciting fishing over those marquee hatches.

New Tying Tips

Today we posted three new videos on our YouTube channel about Fly Tying Techniques: Blending Dubbing, Preparing Deerhair and Spinner Wings. These are short – but hopefully highly informative – tips for tiers of alllevels. Take a look at the segment on Spinner Wings below. Then, be sure to click the "subscribe" button in our YouTube channel so you're notified when we publish new videos in the months ahead.

I look forward to seeing you at the Lodge this season to try out these flies!
